Summer weather on Sanibel is famously beautiful. Temperatures and humidity are both high, but our cool Gulf breezes keep it from feeling too oppressive. There’s no need to let the heat chase you inside all day; in fact, there are plenty of outdoor activities that are perfect on a Sanibel summer day. We love the summer here in our island paradise!

Early Morning at Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge

First thing in the morning is the perfect time to visit the famous Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, before the heat really sets in. Besides staying relatively cool in the morning, you’ll often find that the birds and animals are more active at that time of day. Spend the morning hiking, birdwatching, biking the beautiful trails, or even taking a kayak or paddle board out on the water. The refuge is open at 7:00 a.m. every day except Friday.

Lunchtime at Sanibel’s Beaches

Sanibel Beach

After you’ve enjoyed the wildlife sanctuary, pack up a picnic lunch and hit the beach! Any of our six spectacular public beaches are a great spot to hang out and enjoy some time on your own or with your family. Bring along a good book, some sand toys for the kids, and plenty of water and sunscreen! A beach umbrella is also a good idea to get a break from the hot Florida sun. Late morning and early afternoon are perfect for splashing in the Gulf to beat the heat.

A Relaxing Afternoon Indoors

After spending the day outside, you may want to move indoors to beat the worst of the heat and avoid our typical afternoon rain showers. Take in some beautiful art at the Watson MacRae Gallery or look for antiques at Islander Trading Post. And if you’ve had enough activity for the time being, you could always just take a nap on the lanai!

Dinnertime at a Sanibel Restaurant
