Sanibel Island is known for its beautiful beaches year round, but summer has an interesting mix of weather. With temperatures regularly reaching over 90 degrees during the day, and the classic Florida afternoon showers, it’s nice to have some indoor activities planned as a backup! Thankfully, Sanibel has no shortage of these. Below, we’ve listed five of our favorite ways to beat the heat when you need a little break from the Sanibel sunshine!
You always say you need to find time to read – so here’s your chance! In addition to the wonderful selection of books you’ll find here, the Sanibel Public Library also offers special services including many programs and activities for the kids and adults like. Shopping or Dining
You’re in Paradise. Why not indulge a little? Sanibel is home to great shopping and dining. Combined, Sanibel and Captiva Islands have over 50 unique restaurants and the shoppingis just as plentiful, with many fun and unique boutiques! Looking to do some power shopping? The island has a number of excellent plazas including Periwinkle Place, Olde Sanibel Shoppes, The Village Shops, Tahitian Gardens, and Town Center. After you’ve shopped up an appetite, chow down at one of our favorite restaurants!
Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum
Sea shells are beautiful to look at, but do you know how they’re made, how they help animals, or how they’ve been used throughout history? Re-opening after renovations in mid July 2019, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum has provided education and entertainment for Sanibel residents and visitors since 1995. This museum also houses some record holding shells, including some of the largest ever found! Check out planned activities and buy tickets for your visit here.
Pinnochio’s Italian Ice Cream
Known for their generous scoops, Pinnochio’s is a family run establishment and island favorite since 1980. It has been featured in publications such as Coastal Living, Family Fun, Real Food Real Kitchens, and more. Thirty seven (out of over 130!) flavors are served up each day, including Sanibel Krunch©, Dirty Sand Dollar©, Wedding Bells©, Gator Stew©. FInd them out in the Seahorse Shopping Center next to the historic Sanibel lighthouse!
Are you an animal lover? With so many unique animals on the island, the CROW Clinic was created specifically to serve their needs. In addition to caring for sick, orphaned, or injured animals, the CROW Clinic also offers tours and daily presentations, where you can learn about the day-to-day operations of the clinic and view live animal exhibits.
