Yes, Florida summers are hot. Some Island traditions, however, are worth braving the heat for! One such occasion is Independence Day. Each year on July 4, residents and visitors alike enjoy a day (and night!) filled with fun for the whole family. With so much going on in one day, it can be hard to keep track of what happens when. We’ve summarized some of our favorite Independence Day activities for you here.
The early bird gets the pancakes! You have a long day ahead, so you’ll need proper fuel for your most important meal of the day! Start your morning at the Sanibel Community Church with a free all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast (plus all the fixin’s)! After you’ve had your fill, you’re already in great position for the day’s next big event.
The Fourth of July just isn’t the Fourth of July without a parade – and Sanibel’s does not disappoint. The Sanibel Island Independence Day parade begins at the corner of Tarpon Bay and Periwinkle Way and runs down Periwinkle, ending at Casa Ybel Road. Watch some of our incredible community organizations and local celebs as they drive patriotic decorated cars and hand out flags and candy!
Grab your competitive (and smart!) friends and take part in the longest running Independence Day tradition on the island! The Independence Day Road Rally beings at Noon at Timbers Restaurant on Tarpon Bay Road. Your team will collect clues along a route around the island. Points are awarded teams based on number of clues answered correctly, finish time relative to the rally committee’s estimated completion time, and miles traveled. Sign up soon – only 50 teams are allowed in!
Enjoy a relaxing ride and view the dazzling Sanibel fireworks from the water as you cruise along the San Carlos Bay near Bird Island! These cruises, hosted by Adventures in Paradise, are fun for the whole family and include complimentary snack, soft drinks, and water. Tickets go fast, so make sure you purchase ahead of time!
…Or Enjoy Fireworks on Land
If you’re more of a “landlubber,” the Sanibel fireworks are just as beautiful from the island. They are best viewed from the Sanibel causeway or on the bayside of the island. Don’t plan on setting off your own fireworks, however. In order to preserve the character of the island, Sanibel enforces a strict policy regarding the possession and use of fireworks.
